{"id":596,"date":"2010-08-19T10:54:12","date_gmt":"2010-08-19T16:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/haveblue.org\/?p=596"},"modified":"2010-08-19T10:54:12","modified_gmt":"2010-08-19T16:54:12","slug":"we-hold-these-truths-to-be-self-evident-that-not-all-abs-is-created-equal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/haveblue.org\/?p=596","title":{"rendered":"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that not all ABS is created equal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tMy limited knowledge of plastics has bitten me, as I had half expected (hoped) that I could just run the NIP ABS through the Stratasys and have things &#8216;just work&#8217;.\u00a0 As noted previously, I had used the exact same extruder temperature on the ABS from New Image Plastics as with the Stratasys ABS, but had sagging filaments as a result.  <a href=\"http:\/\/hydraraptor.blogspot.com\/\">Nophead<\/a> (who is easily one of the most experienced RepRappers out there) guessed that I likely was using too high of a temperature, which made sense.  But shouldn&#8217;t ABS run just like ABS?  Not a chance, as I found out &#8211; I had mistakenly assumed that &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acrylonitrile_butadiene_styrene\">ABS<\/a>&#8216; referred to a specific polymer composition, when in fact you can tweak the ratios of the components (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acrylonitrile\">Acrylonitrile<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Butadiene\">Butadiene<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Styrene\">Styrene<\/a>) to achieve certain properties.\u00a0 Obviously, NIP is using a different formulation than Stratasys is.\u00a0 Additionally, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.erikdebruijn.nl\/\">Erik de Bruijn<\/a> noted that he had seen different colors of ABS require different temperatures for optimal extrusion.\u00a0 Stratasys is apparently doing a great deal of work to make all of their P400 ABS colors act identically at 270\u00b0 C.\u00a0 Out of interest, here&#8217;s the sticker from a Stratasys reel that lists recommended temperatures for various materials:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/stratasysreeltag.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-608\" title=\"stratasysreeltag\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/stratasysreeltag.jpg?resize=980%2C234\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/stratasysreeltag.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/stratasysreeltag.jpg?resize=300%2C71&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/stratasysreeltag.jpg?resize=768%2C183&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/stratasysreeltag.jpg?resize=210%2C50&amp;ssl=1 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>E20\/E20R is an elastomer (and corresponding support material), ICW06\/ICW06R is an investment casting wax and support, P400R (high-impact polystyrene) is the support for P400 ABS, and P400SR is a soluble support material.\u00a0 It&#8217;s interesting that the 0.010&#8243; tip suggests a higher temperature (for one material, anyhow) than the 0.012&#8243; or 0.016&#8243; tips, but I suppose this makes sense &#8211; you&#8217;d need a less viscous fluid when pumping through a smaller orifice in order to maintain the same linear flowrate.<\/p>\n<p>My latest plate of Mendel parts completed with the NIP ABS, but the results were not as good as with the Stratasys ABS, I&#8217;m sorry to say.\u00a0 I had severe warping on the larger parts, though this could be due in part to me dropping the extrusion temperature down by 15\u00b0 C early on in the build as a result of nophead&#8217;s suggestion.\u00a0 On the plus side, the NIP peels off of the support material just beautifully (perhaps a little too well, as one of the drive-pulley_3off parts became detached from the raft near the end of the build).\u00a0 I&#8217;m wondering if the lower adhesion between the two materials may have also contributed to the warping &#8211; keeping the corners held down more securely may be part of the secret of getting more accurate prints.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/featheryfilaments.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-612\" title=\"featheryfilaments\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/featheryfilaments.jpg?resize=614%2C462\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/featheryfilaments.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/featheryfilaments.jpg?resize=300%2C226&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/featheryfilaments.jpg?resize=768%2C578&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/featheryfilaments.jpg?resize=210%2C158&amp;ssl=1 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also notice a lot of fine feathery filaments with the NIP ABS at the end of an extrusion path.\u00a0 Whereas the Stratasys ABS acts like a microscale toothpaste, the NIP ABS acts like a microscale silicone caulk.\u00a0 The NIP ABS also shows its displeasure at the higher temperatures by turning brown after sticking to the nozzle for a while (meanwhile the Stratasys ABS would simply lose a bit of color, but not appear to actually be charring).\u00a0 So, time for some testing to see if there is a magic temperature at which the NIP ABS acts like the Stratasys ABS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/temperaturetest.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-613\" title=\"temperaturetest\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/temperaturetest.jpg?resize=614%2C452\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/temperaturetest.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/temperaturetest.jpg?resize=300%2C221&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/temperaturetest.jpg?resize=768%2C566&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/haveblue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/temperaturetest.jpg?resize=210%2C155&amp;ssl=1 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I adjusted the white balance on this photo to better capture the filament detail &#8211; the parts really do not look this grubby, although it&#8217;s interesting to note that the highest temperature pass does look a bit browner than the others.\u00a0 I created a box with the 0.15&#8243;
